How it works
Tooway™connects your computer via satellite to a super fast link to the main internet backbone.
A single satellite minidish and a set-top-box (modem) are all you need, the 10.2 Mbps broadband service is available everywhere in Europe with no regional discrimination, and you don't need a phone line.
Typical User Profiles
Everyone's different, so Tooway™ comes in 4 different packages. This means if you're a light user you'll pay a lot less for your Tooway™ service than someone who's a very heavy user.
We think this is fair and it's the way all broadband services will soon be priced including traditional fixed line options like ADSL. Using our volume calculator, you can easily see how the way your use your broadband service will fit into the different airtime packages.
Light usage
You need the internet for browsing the web and keeping in touch with family and friends. You send quite a lot of emails, and maybe use online chat and Facebook. Our estimate of a 4 GB monthly data allowance would allow you roughly:-
- 2000 emails
- 210 documents
- 60 music tracks
- 90 hours of browsing
- 20 video clips
- 130 photos or images
- 2 downloaded movies
Frequent usage
You need broadband to be able to reliably surf, send emails, download music. You regularly use YouTube and exchange documents and photos shop occasionally online. Our estimate of a 8 GB monthly data allowance would allow you roughly:-
- 3200 emails
- 300 documents
- 90 music tracks
- 180 hours of browsing
- 35 video clips
- 180 photos or images
- 5 downloaded movies
Heavy usage
You work from home and occasionally send and receive large emails or files. You have more than one computer at home, and maybe a smart phone. You watch TV over the internet as well as shopping regularly online. Our estimate of a 13 GB monthly data allowance would allow you roughly:-
- 4800 emails
- 480 documents
- 160 music tracks
- 270 hours of browsing
- 60 video clips
- 310 photos or images
- 8 downloaded movies
Very heavy usage
You need a powerful connection to support 3 or 4 computers for work use or family use. You regularly send and receive large emails, and enjoy the rich variety of multi media websites on the web. Our estimate of a 25 GB monthly data allowance would allow you roughly (split over several PC's):-
- 6000 emails
- 690 documents
- 220 music tracks
- 420 hours of browsing
- 90 video clips
- 440 photos or images
- 14 downloaded movies
Fair Access Policy
We like to think of Tooway™ as a very fair product. We charge users according to how much they want or need to use their connections, so light or occasional users get a fairer deal than with some traditional broadband business models.
To guarantee that all users experience equitable high speed Internet access, the Tooway™ service has a policing feature to control excessive use and to enforce the subscription levels.
We call this feature the Fair Access Policy (FAP). Excessive users become limited in speed at the moment they exceed a certain threshold of transferred data volume in any given time period.
This feature has been built in to protect regular users' high quality connectivity from excessive use by just a few users customer. The volume limit depends on the service package the customer has subscribed to. If we didn't do this policing automatically, typically 80% of the available bandwidth on the network would be consumed by 20% of the customers.
If you need to send and receive more data than the Tooway™ account you've chosen allows, you maybe slowed down by the Fair Access Policy (FAP). But don't' worry, at this point you can either:-
- Upgrade to the next service level
- Buy a volume booster token from us just for that month
- Wait until your usage level falls below the FAP
Here's how the FAP translates in what each account will give you in terms of priority access on a daily basis. Remember. We'll never cut you off, and shortly you'll be able to monitor your monthly data usage on line via our website.

Truly Green Broadband - Tooway™ is environmentally friendly
Satellite broadband is probably the most ecologically friendly way to communicate over large distances. Tooway™ is the most cost effective way in financial terms to provide truly scalable broadband communications to isolated locations or remote communities, and installing satellite internet is kind to the countryside as well.
To enable a home, business or community to receive broadband by satellite, we don't need to dig holes or trenches to lay cables; there are no unsightly masts, towers or aerials needed. We don't therefore need to disturb wildlife, flora or fauna to connect you to super fast broadband. Unlike its wired counterparts, satellite broadband needs no energy-expensive civil engineering works to every house, no unsightly street cabinets.
A single satellite sitting in space consumes little to no fuel to run and can serve entire continents. The Tooway™ satellites run on 100% solar energy and the complete satellite launch process, using hydrogen powered engines, generates about the same amount of CO2 as a normal US coast-to-coast airline trip on a Boeing 747.
Typically our Tooway™ satellites will remain in service once launched for 15 years.
ToowayDirect has green credentials too:-
- Over 20% of our company's energy is generated onsite using solar panels.
- There's no brown or nuclear energy on our site. What energy we can't generate onsite we source from Good Energy.
- We make extensive use of recycling for all our business waste including packaging of all satellite equipment and old customer equipment.
- We're committed to improving our green credentials by at least 20% per annum.
